Romiley Operatic Society's 75th Anniversary Show,
Fiddler On The Roof, closed on 18th March 2006 after a superb run!
This superb musical was directed by Rod Goddard, with Clare Sweeney
carving the orchestra. Romiley had a new choreography team in the
guise of Tracy Haslam and Sharon Bell. The show received critical
acclaim, with the Stockport Times described it as a 'top notch'
show by a 'sparkling 50-strong company [who] are no amateurs'. See
the full review here.
Fiddler On The Roof is set in the small jewish village
of Anatevka, Russia in the early 20th century. It is concerned primarily
with the efforts of Tevye, a dairyman, his wife Golde and their
5 daughters to cope with their harsh existance under Tsarist rule.
Fiddler is a superb musical - a sometimes funny, sometimes poignant,
thought-provoking show excellently underpinned by Jerry Bock's superb
score and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics.
Fiddler won 9 Tony awards in 1965, with the 1971
film version winning 3 Academy awards. For more information about
the show, see Musical
Heaven's synopsis page.
This is Romiley Operatic's third production of Fiddler,
having previously performed it in 1992 and 1983 at the Devenport
Theatre in Stockport.
